North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov

In 2011 St.Petersburg State Medical Academy named after I.I. Mechnikov was merged with St.Petersburg Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education to form one of the country’s largest medical universities.

The university has a strong teaching staff, about 90% of people have an academic degree, and in total two thousand higher school teachers work within the walls of the medical university. There are twice as many students here – four thousand. Two thirds of this number are trained on a budgetary basis, and only a third – on a paid basis.

Six in-house clinical divisions provide students with the regular practice. Approximately 340 thousand patients per year receive medical care at NWSMU.

According to the target quota a little more than 30% of applicants enter every year, about 80% of people are provided with a place in the dormitory.

The majority of NWSMU students are enrolled in Clinical Medicine, and about a quarter of students chose Health Science and Preventive Medicine.
